Death of Mario Ventura, President of the Festroia

Friday 30 June 2006, by SIGNIS

Brussels, June 19 2006 (Signis/Guido Convents) - SIGNIS has been deeply moved at the news that Mr Mario Ventura Henriques, President of the International Film festival of Troia (Setubal), passed away on Friday 16 June.

Mario Ventura’s vision, widely shared by his team, was to build a festival which could promote cinema from small film producing countries and features and documentaries from all over the world - especially Africa and Asia - that could serve a culture of peace and humanism. From the beginning, this vision has been supported by the Portuguese member of OCIC, now SIGNIS. In choosing this profile for the festival, he did not take the easy or “popular” way. Mario Ventura believed in the power of culture and human relations. Despite being an unbeliever, he always defended values with which Christians could identify. In 1988, the OCIC Board responded favourably to the request of its Portuguese member to organize a Jury at the Festroia. It was the beginning of a warm and fruitful collaboration between the Festival and OCIC/SIGNIS. We are saddened by his sudden death and would like to assure his family and friends of our friendly support.
