Monday 7 March 2016, by SIGNIS

Mangalore, March 7th, 2016 (SIGNIS India). From February 23rd-26th, was the SIGNIS India National Assembly 2016, with the theme “Media and Family Values”. It took place at the Pastoral Institute, Mangalore.

In the inaugural address, Mangalore Diocesan Bishop Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza said values begin in the family.

Soon after the inauguration, Bishop Most Rev Dr Salvadore Lobo, Catholic Bishops Conference of India Chairperson for Social Communication addressed the gathering, saying “present day media have their own defects though they are too fast and reach all places too quickly. He added that a few media were distorting facts in order to gain popularity.

Lobo regretted that the “punishment” those media give is more than “a death penalty”. He said modern gadgets affect families and it results in erosion of values.

He called upon the gathering to counter digital media through personal encounters.

Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred and SIGNIS India President Sunil Lucas among others were present. About 100 delegates from all over India took part in the three day deliberations.
