Manila, October, 17th, 2016 (CMMA). The 38th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) were celebrated last week in the Philippines. The theme for this year’s CMMA was based on the message of Pope Francis for World Communications Day :“Communication and Mercy: A Fruitful Encounter”.

Many categories are honoured during the ceremony: every media (Print media, Radio, Television, Internet programmes and Films) has winner in multiple sections, such as stories for kids, young people, educational programme, investigative news... A special Posthumous Award was given to Ambassador Antonio L. Cabangon Chua, chairman and president of the CMMA for almost 17 years.

Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, archbishop of Manila and CMMA honorary chairman, gave the keynote address. In his opening message, he encouraged journalists to make sure that “communications is mercifully done.” He added : “We hope communication will always be done in the spirit of mercy. We hope every act of communication is mercifully done. This is the only way that could evoke change.” Tagle said it is unfortunate that “many merciless things are put out."

Among the leading Church personalities who attended the presentation program were Bishop Honesto F. Ongtioco, DD, STL, diocese of Cubao; and Msgr. Arnaldo Catalan, counselor at the Apostolic Nunciature in the Philippines.

The CMMA was established in 1978 by Cardinal Sin, as the means by which the Church pays tribute to those who “serve God by means of the mass media” and is an annual project of the Archdiocese of Manila.
