Marathi Jesus of Nazareth Online

Friday 26 February 2016, by SIGNIS

Mumbai, Brussels, February 26th, 2016 (Don Bosco India/SIGNIS). Jesus of Nazareth, Director Franco Zeffirelli’s 1977 film about the life of Christ dubbed into Marathi is now partly available online. The agony, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in four parts is accessible on the TejPrasarini-Marathi YouTube channel.

"Mr. Jayantkumar Tribhuvan and his set of Pune artists - did this project for free. TejPrasarini only paid the studio and material costs for the Umatic tapes... This was a major project that began with the founding of TejPrasarini (1992) which has finally seen the light of day," says founder-director of TejPrasarini, Father Peter Gonsalves, sdb.

It is a professional labour of love that is available for online viewing because of easy access to digital editing today. "Considering that it was done before the digital age across nearly 10 years, (1992 to 2000) at his own place and time, I consider it a marvel and a gift to Maharashtra," adds Father Gonsalves currently Director of the Faculty of Social Communications at the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome.

Father Joaquim Fernandes, Director of TejPrasarini and South Asia Delegate for Social Communications says "this is a marvellous accomplishment and now that it is online, many Marathi people will be impacted during this season of Lent. I hope people check these wonderful videos and renew their lives."

The original translation and dubbing is by Jayantkumar Tribhuvan (1942-2006), courtesy RAI, Italy with the dubbing produced by TejPrasarini, Don Bosco Communications, Matunga, Mumbai.
