‘Pope won’t ‘play himself’ in upcoming film

Wednesday 3 February 2016, by SIGNIS

Rome, Brussels, February 3rd, 2016 (SIGNIS/Zenit). On Monday February 1st, ENVI Pictures, a film production company, issued a statement saying the Argentine Pontiff will play himself in the film “Beyond the Sun”, a family adventure based on the Gospels.

Reports claiming Pope Francis “will play himself” in this film have been now refuted by the Vatican’s Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications, Monsignor Dario Edoardo Viganò, reported Vatican Radio.

“The Pope,” the prefect stressed in response to this claim, “is not an actor.”

Msgr. Viganò explained that no scenes for the movie were filmed “on purpose,” but he did not exclude “as has happened before, video clips of the Pope could appear in the film.”
Any profits from the film will be used to support two Argentinian charities for children, El Alemendro and Los Hogares de Cristo, which aid at-risk children and young adults.
