Tuesday 3 November 2015, by SIGNIS

Kiev, November 3rd, 2015 (SIGNIS/Interfilm). At the Kiev International Film Festival "Molodist", the Ecumenical Jury gave its Prize to Ixcanul (Volcano), by Jayro Bustamante, Guatemala/France, 2015

Motivation: This movie shows with impressive pictures and outstanding performances of actors and actresses the shameful reality of the merciless poverty of Indian Maya people. The film provides us access to the private, economic and religious practices, with special emphasis on the destiny of women. Under almost inhuman conditions, the mother and the daughter keep their dignity, love and solidarity.

Synopsis: María, a 17-year-old Kaqchikel Maya, lives with her parents on a coffee plantation at the foot of an active volcano. She is set to be married to the farm’s foreman. But María longs to discover the world on the other side of the mountain, a place she cannot even imagine. And so she seduces a coffee-harvester who wants to escape to the USA. When this man leaves her behind, María discovers her own world and culture anew. (trigon-film)

In the International Competition for Short Films the jury awards its Prize to

À ses enfants la patrie reconnaissante (Our Fallen Heroes)
