Monday 9 November 2015, by SIGNIS

Cottbus, November 9th, 2015 (SIGNIS/INTERFILM). At the 25th Film Festival Cottbus Festival of East European Cinema, the Ecumenical Jury, appointed by INTERFILM and SIGNIS, awards its Prize to Imena Visnje (The Ungiven), directed by Branko Schmidt, Croatia, 2015.

Motivation: In restrained images, the film tells the story of an old couple, returning
after the war to his village and trying to cope with everyday life. Behind the man’s
patriarchal stubbornness he hides his care and love for his wife whose dementia
progresses slowly. Intensified in the manner of a chamber play the film manages to
evoke deep emotions without grand gestures.

Synopsis: An old couple returns to their village which has been destroyed by the war. Everyday life is composed by recurring activites. He draws water, goes shopping,
and repairs the ruined buildings of the farm. She cleans up and prepares the meals.
He is getting more and more irritated, she depressive and forgetful. (Festival
