Don Bosco is present in the digital world

Thursday 18 February 2016, by SIGNIS

Madrid, Brussels, February 18th, 2016 (ANS/SIGNIS). About a hundred people from different Salesian works took part in the Second Salesian Communication Day, on Saturday 13 February at the Provincial House in Madrid. The theme chosen for the meeting was the Salesian presence in the digital world.

Fr Juan Carlos Pérez Godoy, the Superior of the Spanish Province of St James the Greater, welcomed the participants and encouraged them to be present in social networks, as well as in the digital playground. This is a new playground which is also a place of meeting, as Fr Filiberto González, Councillor General for Social Communication, has said. He supported the need for a Salesian presence in this area, while at the same time maintaining the "quality of human relations".

Subsequently, Fr Javier Valiente, National Delegate for the Salesian Communication, addressed the pastoral challenges of the Salesian presence on the networks. He said that this presence must reflect the way we live every day - the experience of Christian life, the Gospel, the focus on children and young people ... and added that "Don Bosco would be present in the social networks."

The second session of the day was characterized by dialogue and debate. Miguel Angel Davara, a lawyer specializing in computer law, briefly presented the legal aspects related to the use of social networks: security, privacy, the use of images, copyright, etc. Despite the challenge in meeting all requirements, Dr Davara encouraged those present to use social networks with awareness and responsibility.

In the afternoon, Carlos Martín, Social Media Manager of the Spanish Province of Mary Help of Christians, examined the issue of how to act in a Salesian way on social networks. He began by recalling the various concerns of the present and of the Salesian Family. For this, he insisted on the idea of working on the Salesian brand, and on our social identity, not to mention the creation of a community of participants. He also offered some tips and technique and style to help the participants to communicate even better

Fr Valiente ended the day by invoking the memory of Don Bosco and stating that in communication the rule has to be: "Forward, always forward."
