Pope’s Twitter accounts have more than 26 million followers

Vatican City, Brussels, January, 11th, 2016 (Zenit/VR/SIGNIS). Vatican Radio announced that the nine @pontifex Twitter accounts had reached over 26 million followers on January 7th . The English account has more than 8 million followers.

The @pontifex account was opened on December 12th, 2012 by Benedict XVI, with a tweet in 8 languages (Spanish, English, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Polish, and Arabic). He wrote “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.”

After one month, the 8 accounts had reached 2 million followers, and a few days later, the Latin account was launched.

As for Pope Francis, he tweeted for the first time on March, 18th, 2013, a few days after his election. “Dear friends, I thank you from my heart and I ask you to continue to pray for me. Pope Francis”.

In April 2015, there were more than 20 million followers.
