Training of the Catholic Radio Network

Wednesday 5 October 2016, by SIGNIS

Juba, October, 5th, 2016 (AMECEA). The Catholic Radio Network (CRN) had a training on dissemination of the South Sudan Peace Agreement. During three days, the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD) and Trocaire, have partnered to equip journalists with better skills to disseminate the contents of the agreement to South Sudanese.

Mugove Chakurira, CTP Deputy Country Director and workshop facilitator, said that he hoped the journalists get full knowledge of the agreement and deliver correct information to their listeners.

The workshop facilitator advised the journalists to use the peace agreement as a reference for peace building, reconciliation and healing and inclusive participation of citizens. The training covered pertinent issues that included the history of the Sudan conflict from 2005 to 2013, the role of the journalists in reporting conflicts and peace issues as well as the protocol to the Agreement on the Resolution of the South Sudan conflict among other topics.

The workshop brought together journalists from Radio Anisa, Easter, Emmanuel Bakhita, Don Bosco, Voice of Hope and CRN News Desk.

The Catholic Radio Network is a media project constituted by community-based radio stations broadcasting in South Sudan. All stations broadcast shared programs in English: news, civic education, and other educational programs. Due to the heterogeneous realities of South Sudan, each station is rooted in its locality and broadcasts locally produced culture-sensitive programs in the languages which are understood by the local people. For its outreach, CRN has a potential audience of about seven million people, considering the influx of returnees to South Sudan after the Sudan Population Census 2008. Since its beginning, CRN has extensively educated the public, especially the illiterates, on the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the democratic process, the Sudan Elections 2010 and the Southern Sudan Referendum 2011. From July 9 2011 CRN is promoting nation building and the rule of law.
