Catholic Television and the environment: Green Spirit TV

Wednesday 25 November 2015, by SIGNIS

Toronto, Brussels, November 25th, 2015 (SIGNIS/Green Spirit TV) In the United States, Green Spirit TV has produced a series of videos and lesson plans that will support teaching about Pope Francis Encyclical, Laudato Sii, Cultivating and Caring for Creation.

Twelve-part video and lesson plan series, featuring Papal teachings, CCCB’s recent document on Church Teachings on the Environment, along with a selection of key religious and lay leaders across the country who have worked for decades on initiatives and parish-based education to help Catholics become participants in this growing Church-based eco justice movement.

The television programs refer to the words of Pope Francis said in 2013: “Let us be ’protectors’ of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment.
Green Spirit TV (GSTV) is a co-production between roman catholic TV and a variety of Catholic communities (religious communities and dioceses) concerned with Catholic teaching on eco justice themes. Cultivating and Caring for Creation is GSTV’s contribution to this evolving conversation: a series of twelve on-line Internet TV videos and lesson plans.

The series were created to model a response to Pope Francis’ Encyclical "Laudato Si" on the environment and includes highlights from Building a New Culture: Central Themes in Recent Church Teaching on the Environment (Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, January 2013). Bishop Donald Bolen, chair of CCCB’s Justice and Peace Commission, provided oversight assistance to the series, including writing and presenting its narratives. Cultivating and Caring for Creation is intended to inspire teachers and learners to become informed participants in the emerging Catholic eco justice movement.
