H2Onews: World Congress of Catholic Radio

Rome, June 19, 2008 (H2Onews) - What is the identity of Catholic radio, what are its expectations and where is its future? The first Congress of Catholic Radio, sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications has begun in Rome, and has taken up the task of answering these questions.

President of the Council, Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, sets out the objectives of this meeting held at the Pontifical Urbaniana University from June 19 to 21st. An anticipated 63 Catholic radio stations from various cultural, religious and political sectors will be represented at the Congress.

"We tried to bring these people together to talk together, reflect, to understand what the identity and mission of Catholic radio is in the world today."

The Internet has also impacted radio, Archbishop Celli explains.

"Because today, for example, it is undeniable that there is a multimedia tool that interests all sectors, the Internet. Today many radio stations, including Vatican Radio, can be heard over the Internet."

Archbishop Celli shares that he himself listens to radio programming: "I listen to the radio and appreciate the music, the news. Sometimes I happened to hear some of the religious programs. I am a regular listener."
