European Assembly of SIGNIS in Berlin

Berlin, June 21, 2009 (SIGNIS-Europe) - The annual General Assembly of SIGNIS Europe was held in Berlin from June 18th to 21st, attended by 24 members of 21 countries in Europe. They elected six delegates for a next term (2009-2013) as their representatives to the General Assembly of SIGNIS World.

Among them Jos Horemans (Belgium) and Joachim Opahle (Germany) were re-elected as President and Vice-President. Jos Horemans has worked as a teacher and school director. Since 1968 he has been an active member of the Catholic Filmleague, now called FilmMagie, of which he was elected President in 1993. He is the director and editor of their monthly film magazine. Joachim Opahle worked as an editor in public and private radio companies and for several years and was press spokesman for the Bishop of Bamberg. He is currently Head of the Media Department (Radio and TV) of the archdiocese of Berlin.

The assembly approved the organisation of the next SIGNIS WACC European TV Festival for Religious Programmes, to be held in June 2010 in Berlin. And for 2011, they added the International Film Festival of Warsaw as a newcomer to their list of film festivals attended by a SIGNIS Jury.

The assembly also took as priorities for the coming years: support of new potential members like Russia, Serbia and Ukraine and the building of a social network through the internet among their members.

A delegation of seven (including a representative of the Middle East sub-region) will be the European representatives at the SIGNIS World Congress in Chiang Mai (Thailand) next October.
