"Lourdes" Wins SIGNIS Award in Venice 2009

Venice, September 13, 2009 (SIGNIS) - At the 66th Venice Film festival (Mostra), the SIGNIS Prize was given to the film Lourdes from Jessica Hausner (Austria).

"Lourdes" leads us to frontiers of human expectations

"The SIGNIS Prize is awarded to writer and director Jessica Hausner for Lourdes , not because the film is set in an essentially Catholic context but because it raises fundamental human questions: faith, physical suffering, hope, miracles and the inexplicable. With remarkable technical and artistic skills, the director leads us to frontiers of human expectations, allowing the audience to discover the meaning of human freedom and divine intervention."

This film was also awarded the Fipresci Award.

A SIGNIS Commendation went to Lebanon by Samuel Maoz (Israel).

"The Jury is conscious of the long conflicts between Israel and Lebanon, especially from 1982 to the war of 2006 and the desire for respect and peace in the region. While Lebanon is set inside an Israeli tank, affording a unique point of view on the first day of the war with Lebanon, June, 1982, it offers a portrait of any young soldiers psychologically unprepared to come face to face with combat. The film is a cry out of the depths for the suffering people of the whole region."

This film was also awarded the Golden Lion Award.

The SIGNIS Jury members were: Gianluca Arnone (Italy), Frank Desiderio (USA), Massimo Giraldi (Italy), Peter Malone (Australia), Joseph Palakeel (India), Astrid Poltz-Watzenig (Austria) and Magali Van Reeth (France).
