UNESCO releases series of seven human rights related films
Paris, 24 May 2006 (UNESCO) - UNESCO has just released of a series of seven films and documentaries illustrating how topics such as human rights, the fight against discrimination, freedom of expression, tolerance and peace can be approached by public service television.
From the fight of handicapped women for motherhood to a man’s battle against desertification, from the use of rap and dance to escape violence to reflecting on the concept of “home” and migration, these films will lead viewers to consider important societal issues.
UNESCO produced this series within the context of its cross-cutting theme “Harnessing ICTs for the audiovisual industry and public service broadcasting in developing countries”, particularly the component “ICT-enhanced Public Service Broadcasting: Contributing to the development of human rights, peace, tolerance and the fight against discrimination (ICT@PSB)”, co-implemented by the Communication and Information Sector and the Sector of Social Sciences. For this, the Organization launched a call for productions in 2004 to which more than 200 audiovisual professionals replied submitting their film proposals. Seven scripts were then produced throughout 2004-2005.
The objective of this initiative was to put information and communication technologies to the use of programme development on major social and development issues by providing public service broadcasters and independent producers with training, production and distribution opportunities in this area.
