Community Radio to Come to Kiribati

Australia, 31 May 2006 (Signis-Pacific) - Powercorp, an Australian company, is providing remote Pacific islands with FM radio. The Kiribati Government has awarded a contract to Powercorp to set up the first radio contact between the country’s coral islands.

The islands are so remote that the radio equipment will be transported by canoe. Malcolm Crosse, a senior project Engineer with Powercorp has been assisting St Paul’s Communication Centre and the Diocese of Tarawa in Kiribati to establish this country’s first community radio station. St Paul’s Centre, under the guidance of Sister Teneti Bakarereua OLSH, have a well-established studio complex, experienced personnel and the expertise of Malcome Crosse from Powercorp in their development of the new radio venture.

The one ingredient missing is sufficient funding to purchase the transmitter and some associated equipment. Malcome Crosse and his team have volunteered their services to install the transmitter once the money is found to buy it.
