SIGNIS welcomes a new Ecclesiastical Assistant

Luis García Orso, has been designated by the Pontifical Council for the Laity as our Ecclesiastical Assistant. He was born in Tijuana, B.C. A Jesuit, Doctor of Theology at the Faculty of Theology of Barcelona (Catalonia), he also has a degree in philosophy and social sciences from ITESO in Guadalajara.

He was a Professor of Fundamental Theology and Christology at the Ibero-American University of Mexico and at the Pontifical University of Mexico. He has also promoted the study of theology, spirituality and film in other centres, courses and workshops.

Thanks to the work of Father Henk Hoestra, at the end of the 1990s, he was encouraged to work more with this perspective and methodological approach to the films that we watch.

He is the author of many articles and books, such as Mirados de fe en el cine actual (2014). He was, for many years, the coordinator of the Commission for Social Communication of the Society of Jesus in Mexico.

He was the president of OCIC in Mexico from 1995 to 2002 and of SIGNIS-Mexico from 2002 to 2006; and then again from 2009 to 2012. He also was a member of the Board of OCLACC, from January 2004 to February 2010, then became vice-president from 2010 to 2012. Currently, he is working in the management team of the Pius Latin American Pontifical College in Rome, where student priests live while studying. In his work at SIGNIS-Latin America, he promoted cinema and spirituality workshops as well as the participation of Latin Americans in juries in international film festivals. He has been a SIGNIS juror in national festivals in Mexico and in international festivals such as Havana, Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, San Sebastián-Donostia, Toulouse, Venice and Rome.

We are very fortunate to have someone so deeply committed for many years to the work of SIGNIS appointed for such an important office. We thank Fr. Luis for his generous acceptance of the position and we welcome him as a member of our Board of Directors.
