SIGNIS Media 4/2015 : The Soul of the Earth

Brussels, December 10th, 2015. What defines us as human beings, according to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, is our self-reflective consciousness, which brings with it the capacity of free choice and our ability to love.

The term “noosphere” (from the Greek word for mind) is his description of a resulting global consciousness that takes us to a new level of evolution – evolution that is not yet finished and that we humans now participate in through our choices, for good or for ill. Future evolution of the planet and of our human species is largely in our own hands.

Communications is the very soul of the noosphere, which means that we in SIGNIS possess a privileged position in it. As Christine Tracy writes in this issue of SIGNIS Media, the global “sphere” of journalism – whether practiced in radio, video, or print – (what she calls the newsphere) gives us the power and responsibility to exercise our skills and professions in a way that builds up the common good. To help create a global culture of peace.
