Malaysian Lenten campaign promotes advocacy via social media

Brussels, February 11th, 2016 (SIGNIS). The office for human development of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur launched, on Wednesday 10th February, in collaboration with SIGNIS Malaysia and the Public Media Agency in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Single Adults & Youth office a vast Lenten Campaign.

The theme for this year is “Merciful like the Father” and the focus is on “Promoting Compassion in the community”. What is remarkable is the promotion of the process of education and advocacy through the social media, and the dissemination of it on social networks, which increases participation through multiple platforms.

A Lenten Campaign Resource Kit has been produced to provide useful and relevant materials and guidelines for activities.

The organizers don’t only encourage adults, but focus on young people to use these resources and/or to create other materials and resources that are appropriate and practical for their group or community.

In the kit, you can also find linkages with the increasingly popular social media in the community and amongst the young. The organizers have also foreseen printed materials, a video programme and presentation slides to use in parishes and schools. Children can walk the Lenten path by colouring each day and doing good deeds with praying, fasting and sharing by following a 40-day Lent planner.

In this kit, important attention is given to children by giving them different materials that make them active and involved. For instance, they can colour drawings or make their own paper toys to play Lenten parable characters. A special attention is also given to activities about nature: “Care-4-Nature”.
