SIGNIS President Easter Message

Havana, March 22, 2016,
To all members and associates of SIGNIS
Dear colleagues:

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. As every year, I write to you on occasion of the celebration of Easter, the most important feast of our faith.

Easter is a celebration of life, and SIGNIS, thank God, shows great vitality, particularly where it is most important: in its grass-roots activity, with the dynamic work of community radios, siding with the marginalized wherever their rights are violated; with its usually active participation in film festivals, where representatives of its members promote the best of cinema by granting SIGNIS and Ecumenical awards; with a variety of events of formation and spiritual growth through media, organized in parishes and other grass-roots groups, and with a growing presence of our members and regional groups in social media.

The Executive Committee held their meeting in Rome, in order to support a new phase in the work of SIGNIS Services Rome and, by meeting with the Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications of the Holy See, to initiate a most important exchange with this new dicastery, now our functional referent in the Vatican. Winds of renewal can also be felt at the SIGNIS Secretariat in Brussels, with the reorganization of their activities in agreement with the present desk-oriented structure of the Association.

The first steps are being taken in the preparation of the SIGNIS World Congress in Quebec City, Canada, 2017. Next June, our Board of Directors will meet in that city, in the same facilities of Laval University where the Congress is to be held.

We celebrate Easter this year in the Holy Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. Sadly, stories abound in the news about so many who are in need of mercy: migrants running away from war and hunger, only to fall prey of human traffickers and be rejected later by those who should shelter them; innocents who suffer terrorist violence, such as in today’s attacks in Brussels or the barbaric actions ravaging the Middle East daily, with their wake of desolation and death. Our thoughts and prayers go to the victims and their families.

Signs of hope come from recent positive events in my country: first, the encounter between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill, the first one ever between a Roman Pope and a Russian Orthodox Patriarch in almost 1000 years, and the official visit to Cuba of the President of the United States, who came, as he stated, “to bury the last remains of the Cold War”.

Easter is the feast of renewal and hope, when we celebrate the Risen Christ in his definitive victory and the fulfillment of his promise: “I have come that they may have life, life in all its fullness” (John 10, 10). May our message for this Easter be one of complete confidence on the merciful love of God, as we devote ourselves, as our motto proclaims and our world needs more than ever, to promote stories of hope.
It is with these feelings that, together with my Vice Presidents Lawrence John Sinniah and Frank Frost, I wish you a most happy Easter.

Gustavo And˙jar
President of SIGNIS
