At the SIGNIS WYD encounter at the São Roque Museum in Lisbon, SIGNIS youth members and attendees were surprised by Dr. Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, who came to remind them how important it is for the Church to have young voices be present. 

"Count on the Dicastery, but also help us understand what we can do because the Church cannot do it alone if it doesn't have young people alongside it. We really need to understand how we can improve communication, how we can build a worldwide network, and how not to get carried away. We need to understand that everything comes from communion, that communication is communion. They are one and the same!" Paolo Ruffini addresses the group of young people, mainly from Latin America - Argentina, Colombia, Mexico - who are present at the World Youth Day in various forms, with their media or representing SIGNIS.

They gathered for a greeting, leaving the media center and rushing to join him again before the Via Crucis with Pope Francis. The Prefect himself rushed to arrive, leaving the papal entourage, showing his desire to listen to the young people. He continues: "It's about bringing not just information into communion but into lives. This is what will make us communicators, and the Dicastery cannot do it alone. So, help us! We are here to assist all countries, those that are present and those that are not. Communication is effective only if it allows for encounters, both small, like this, and large like the one in Lisbon. Communication that travels only through networks is not enough, even if it's brilliant and creative; it's not enough if it doesn't lead to doing things together, meeting on the ground." 

The encounter was topped off with a toast to communion, strictly with vinho verde!

 

Un brindisi alla comunicazione che è comunione! 
Un incontro informale tra i giovani di SIGNIS presenti alla GMG a Lisbona riceve a sorpresa il saluto di Paolo Ruffini, prefetto del Dicastero per la Comunicazione 

“Contate sul Dicastero ma anche aiutateci a capire cosa possiamo fare, perché la Chiesa da sola non ce la fa se non ha accanto chi è più giovane: abbiamo veramente bisogno di capire come possiamo migliorare la comunicazione, come possiamo costruire una rete in tutto il mondo, come non montarci la testa. C’è bisogno di capire che tutto viene dalla comunione, che la comunicazione è comunione. Sono la stessa cosa!”. Paolo Ruffini si rivolge spontaneamente al gruppo di giovani - prevalentemente dall’America Latina, Argentina, Colombia, Messico, e alla fine si parla in spagnolo! - presenti alla GMG in varie forme, con i loro media, o in rappresentanza di SIGNIS, e che si sono ritrovati per un saluto, lasciando il media center e cercando di raggiungerlo di corsa di nuovo prima della via crucis con papa Francesco. Anche il prefetto ha fatto una corsa per arrivare, lasciando il seguito papale, segno del desiderio di essere in ascolto dei giovani. E continua: “Si tratta di mettere in comunione non le informazioni ma le vite. E’ quello che ci farà essere comunicanti, e questo il Dicastero non lo può fare da solo. Quindi, aiutateci! Siamo a disposizione per aiutare tutti i Paesi, quelli che sono qui e quelli che non ci sono. La comunicazione è efficace solo se rende possibili incontri come questi, piccolo, e grandi come quello di Lisbona. La comunicazione che viaggia solo sulle reti non basta, anche se è brillante, creativa; non basta se non porta a fare cose insieme incontrandosi sul terreno”.
